Pete Bremy reports:
I
stopped into Hennessey's, a small Irish pub in Morristown, NJ to see
some friends including the people that work there. I've played there
many times. I just happened to be wearing my Vanilla Fudge T-shirt.
As I was standing next to the bar talking to Billy, the manager, a
guy sitting at the bar turns to me and says...
"You
know, I just replaced the Vanilla Fudge drummer in a band last week."
"Uh-huh."
Now,
of course I'm thinking this guy's had a few too many! He just
replaced Carmine Appice? Right. As fast as it took me to think this,
he goes on to say quite matter-of-factly that he filled in a slot
that Joe Brennan, the original dru...
"YOU KNOW
JOE BRENNAN ! ? !"
He said
calmly, "Yeah, why?"
'Nuf said.
Well, this
gentleman's name is Tom Powell- and he had not had a few too many! I
called him at home a few days later, and after checking if it was
okay to give out his number, gave me Joe Brennan's phone number. It
turns out that he lives right here in northern New Jersey ten minutes
from where I work! It's amazing after three years of web seraching!
Do you have any idea how many 'Joe Brennans" there are in New
Jersey alone? Anyway, I left a few messages for him with no reply. I
was beginning to become afraid that there may have been some hard
feelings and he was not interested in talking to me about The Pigeons
or Vanilla Fudge.
A few days
later, the phone rang, and it was another friend of Joe's that Tom
had contacted. He told me that Joe was vacationing in Ireland for a
few weeks. Phew! What a relief. Finally, when Joe returned, we got in
touch, and he was very eager to talk about the Pigeons days. In fact,
he was quick to report that he and Carmine were buddies and hung out
with each other even after Carmine replaced him in The Pigeons.
There's lots more to come in Stan and Bob's interview, so I'll stop here!
Many thanks to
Tom Powell for getting us all together! |
